A sales funnel is the path someone takes from “never heard of you” to “paying customer,” and then to “telling their friends about you.” Every business has one, whether it was built on purpose or not. The difference is whether yours is leaking.
Most small businesses we talk to in San Antonio aren’t short on effort. They post on social media, boost an ad now and then, and have a website that’s been up for a few years. Each piece might be fine on its own. But nothing connects them, so people find the business, look around, and leave. That’s what we call random acts of marketing, and it’s exhausting.
We put together a free guide, The 5-Step Sales Funnel Every Business Needs, to fix that. Below is a quick walk through each step. The full guide goes deeper and includes a 5-minute Funnel Health Check so you can score your own business.
What a Sales Funnel Actually Does
A sales funnel connects every piece of your marketing so each one hands people to the next. Without one, you only hear from people who are ready to buy today. Everyone else, the people who were interested but not ready, quietly disappears.
With a funnel in place, every visitor gets a reason to stay in touch, follow-up happens automatically, and “not yet” has a real chance to turn into “yes” a few weeks later. You also know exactly which step needs fixing, instead of guessing.

Sales Funnel Step 1: Get Found
Before anyone buys, they have to find you, and then understand what you do in about five seconds. This is where a lot of businesses lose people.
- Pass the 5-second test. Your homepage headline should say what you offer and the result people get, with one clear button like “Book a call” or “Get a quote.”
- Own your Google Business Profile. For local searches, it’s often the first thing people see. Fill out every field on your Google Business Profile and post updates regularly.
- Answer the questions people ask. List the questions you hear most from customers and answer each one on your website.
- Pick one paid channel and do it well. A small, focused Google Ads budget aimed at people already searching for what you sell beats a budget spread across five platforms.
Step 2: Capture (The Step Most Businesses Skip)
Most people who visit your website aren’t ready to buy today. If “call us” is the only option, they leave and forget you. The fix is to give them a smaller yes: something free and useful in exchange for their email.
Good free offers are short and specific: a checklist, a price guide, a short how-to, or a quick self-assessment. Then put that offer everywhere: on your homepage, at the end of every blog post, and in your email signature. (Yes, the free guide on this page is a working example of this step.)
Capture also gives you something most businesses never have: a list of people who raised their hand. Instead of waiting for the phone to ring, you can stay in touch with every one of them until the timing is right.
Step 3: Nurture Until They’re Ready
People rarely buy the first time they find you. Nurturing keeps you in front of them, builds trust, and makes you the obvious choice when they are ready.
- A short welcome email series. Write it once and let it send automatically to everyone who downloads your free offer. The guide includes a simple 5-email outline you can copy.
- Retarget with video. Short videos shown on Facebook and Instagram to people who already visited your site keep your business familiar.
- One piece of content, three places. Write one helpful post a week, send it to your email list, and share it on social media and your Google Business Profile.
Step 4: Convert by Making Yes Easy
You’ve earned their attention and trust. Now remove every reason to wait. Sales are often lost to slow replies, unclear next steps and missing follow-up, not to price.
- Reply fast. The first business to respond often wins.
- Show the plan. “Here are the three steps to get you from where you are to where you want to be.”
- Make booking effortless. An online scheduler lets people book a time without back-and-forth emails.
- Follow up more than once. Most sales take more than one touch, and “no” usually means “not yet.”
Step 5: Multiply (Customers Bring Customers)
Happy customers are the most affordable marketing you’ll ever have, yet many businesses never ask them for anything. Ask every customer for a review right after you deliver, ask for referrals by name, and turn real results into short customer stories (with their permission). Those stories feed Step 1 all over again.
One note: some industries, like law and healthcare, have rules about reviews, testimonials and referral rewards, so check yours before you start.
Score Your Sales Funnel in 5 Minutes
Reading about a sales funnel is easy. Knowing which step is costing you the most customers is harder. That’s why the free guide ends with the Funnel Health Check: 15 quick yes-or-no questions across the five steps. Your lowest-scoring step is where to start.
Inside the guide you’ll get:
- All five sales funnel steps, with simple fixes for each one
- A 5-email welcome series outline you can copy
- Word-for-word scripts for asking for reviews and referrals
- The Funnel Health Check to score your business
